Parental Guide - for your peace of mind
Unicom is a family owned, family run business
Unicom has provided high quality, student accommodation for over twenty years. We are a family run business, founded and expanded in Hull. We currently own and manage nearly one thousand bed spaces, but we still maintain a friendly, family run atmosphere.
Unicom owns all of its properties
Our properties are not only managed by Unicom, they are owned by us too. Therefore, we keep all our business ‘in house’ and do not act as agents for any other companies. It is vital for our business, that our properties are presented to you in the best possible condition, and we have a team of maintenance staff employed to ensure that this is always the case. We also have more specialized maintenance staff like our Gas Cert registered plumber and NICEIC registered electrician who have both been part of our team for over fifteen years.
Maintenance staff visiting our property to carry out repairs always carry identification and we try to give notification to the tenants where possible.
Maintenance issues can be reported to us via email, or by popping into to one of our offices.
Tenancy Agreement
For many students signing a Tenancy Agreement is the first time that they will have signed a legally binding document. Before any student signs an agreement with Unicom, a trained member of staff will explain the legal jargon and make sure they fully understand what they are agreeing to. For parents, we have a downloadable copy of our Tenancy Agreement displayed on our website, select this link to download.
Contents Insurance
We have arranged through our insurance partners, Endsleigh Insurance, to give inclusive contents insurance (on certain properties).
It is up to the student to decide whether this cover is suitable for them, and they can upgrade with Endsleigh or any other Insurance company, if they wish. You can upgrade the policy at www.endsleigh.co.uk
24 hr Emergency Helpline
We provide a 24 hr Emergency Helpline. An emergency is classed as anything that is life threatening or too dangerous to be left and reported the next day. We always have one of our maintenance staff on call, so should an emergency situation arise, they will attend within the hour.
If a student locks themselves out of their room/house or looses their keys, a member of the maintenance team will attend. However, if this is outside of office hours there will be a £35 call out charge, payable to the member of staff who attends. Obviously, we will not leave students locked outside of their house, but please be aware that £35 charge is applicable outside of office hours.
Internet and Telephones
Via Kingston Communications we supply wireless Broadband access into every bedroom in the majority of our properties (contact us for more details). The price of this can be included into our Bills Inclusive package or by signing up to our £6.50 Deal. Otherwise it is simply a case of setting up a new account with Kingston Communications when you move into your property.
Student Liaison Officers
We are here to help all students in our accommodation to have the easiest time possible whilst studying in Hull. We have a close relationship with the University and the various support groups therein. Parents can ring 01482 491009 and speak to us regarding any issues they or their child are having with our accommodation.
